Two Pieces of Timber at Hardwick Hall

Hardwick New Hall was built from local materials.  Very sustainable.  The timber came from the local woods, but there seemed to be no shortage given the sizes they chose to use.  Each step is solid oak.  Note how the winding steps are morticed into the near treetrunk size upright.

Today the woods have some standards (fully grown trees) amongst the hazel coppice you can see me cutting here.
