Rochdale Canal in Calderdale

Another day out – beautifully sunny day for a walk along the canal towpath.

At Mytholmroyd (what a great word) we saw a display in a shop window indicating that recent floods covered this road in five feet of water.  No wonder all these shops a closed for refurbishment.

We finished our walk at Hebden Bridge where we found this enormous sundial,

the gnomon being based on a needle used in making the local fabric, fustian, essentially a ribbed fabric such as corduroy.  The fustian needle cut loops of weft to create the furry ribs familiar on corduroy.
