Flanders, Swann, Booth and Gnu

You may have to be really quite old to understand at least some of the title.  Michael Flanders and Donald Swann wrote and sang comic songs back in the middle of the last century – yes I was there and heard them.

A classic was ‘I’m a Gnu’ – in which they pronounced the G, making it a two syllable word.  One verse went:

“Nor am I in the least

Like that dreadful Hartebeest

Oh Gno, Gno, Gno, I’m  a Gnu”

And on the right is the Gnu, whilst on the left is the Hartebeest, both on the wall of the Booth Museum, Brighton.
