Skunk cabbage

Whilst in the woods a day or so ago we spotted what had to be skunk cabbage.  This is an important food for brown bears after they wake from hibernation , because it’s laxative properties help the Bear expel the gravel eaten before hibernation to suppress appetite. We learnt this from our Rocky Mountaineer hosts, who also pointed out that the name of the plant comes from its early flowers, so it was good to know the plant had finished flowering when  we met it.
