Making compost

One of the 2 bins in the back garden was full, and there is a lot of garden waste to compost at this busy season, so it became necessary to empty and sieve the other bin which has been gently doing its composting thing for several months.

Raw compost on the mixing board, top left. Sieved stuff in the big green McDonald’s pickle bin.  It really is a pickle bin from that thoroughly excellent provider of pickle bins – McDonald’s.   Ended up, after a full day of labouring, with nine sacks of fine compost and about half as much coarse stuff.

Some went back I to the bin with new green stuff, and the rest I used as a mulch around apple trees.

One sack has been shopping trolley’d to the allotment and spread around beans, tomatoes and our one pumpkin plant.
