On the way to Henfield and the Downs Link on Sunday we drove up Wakefield Road where I saw a 1950s cast iron lamppost leaning on a section of badly broken flint wall. It must have been pressed over by a big vehicle to fall at right angles to the road. Went back today to record the loss. Clearly sheared just a few inches below the ground, so probably not fixable. So we lose another bit of history – thankfully not the oldest or best, but the extruded and galvanised steel tube replacement will be a poor substitute.
